Stove Glass Measuring & Ordering FAQ
What is stove glass and why is it special?
Stove glass is not ordinary window glass. It is a heat-resistant ceramic glass designed to withstand the extreme temperatures inside wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves. This special glass allows you to enjoy the view of the fire while safely containing heat, sparks, and fumes. Because it is engineered for high performance and safety, it must be cut or shaped precisely to suit your stove model and door frame.
What type of glass do you supply?
All replacement stove glass supplied by Tipperary Stoves is Schott Robax® heat-resistant glass made in Germany, featuring a heavy-duty 4mm thickness. We purchase the glass sheets and cut, shape, and hand-polish them in-house at our Tipperary facility.
Are these original manufacturer parts?
No. We specialize in high-quality aftermarket replacement parts. Any references to specific stove brands or models (e.g., Hamco, Boru, Waterford Stanley) are strictly for compatibility identification purposes. Your replacement glass will not feature a brand logo.
My glass is completely shattered. How do I know what size to order?
If your glass is in pieces, do not measure the broken glass pieces. Instead, measure the inside frame of the stove door where the glass is meant to sit (the recess). Once you have the exact dimensions of the door recess, deduct 4mm to 5mm from both the total width and total height. This gap allows the glass to safely expand when it heats up without cracking against the iron frame.
My glass is just cracked but intact. How should I measure it?
A: Carefully measure the absolute outer edges of the existing glass pane using a metal tape measure for accuracy:
- Measure the exact Width in millimetres (mm).
- Measure the exact Height in millimetres (mm).
- Check the shape: Is it a perfect rectangle, or does it have curved/shaped corners or arches?
Always double-check your measurements against the listings on our store before clicking buy!
What happens if I order the wrong size glass?
As detailed in our Returns Policy, custom-cut glass and specific aftermarket model panels are exempt from standard returns because they are processed to order. If you are unsure which size matches your stove model, please snap a photo of your stove door and email sales@tipperarystoves.ie before ordering so our team can guide you.
Does the replacement glass come with a seal?
It depends on the product listing. Some specific models come with a pre-attached flat glass fibre rope seal tape. If a listing does not explicitly state that a seal is included, we highly recommend adding a pack of our 10mm Stove Rope or flat glass gasket adhesive seal to your order to ensure an airtight fit and optimal stove efficiency.
New Stove Glass Safety & Care FAQs
How do I safely install new stove glass?
Always start by letting the stove cool completely and disconnecting any power supply. Wear heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses, and remove the door if the manufacturer allows it for easier access. Follow the appliance manual for gasket placement and screw tension—glass should be snug, not overtightened. If the frame is warped, screws are seized, or you are unsure about sealing, call a qualified stove technician or installer to avoid leaks, cracks, or safety hazards.
What should I do on the first use after installation?
After fitting the new glass, check that the door closes evenly and the gasket seals all around. Light a small, low-temperature fire first and watch for any smoke leaks around the edges. Allow the stove to heat up gradually so the glass and seals can bed in without thermal shock. Avoid slamming the door or overloading the firebox during the first few burns. If you notice rattling glass, visible gaps, or unusual smells, stop using the stove and have the installation inspected.
How can I clean and maintain the glass to extend its life?
Clean the glass only when it is completely cold, using a soft cloth or non-scratch pad and a stove-glass-safe cleaner or damp newspaper dipped in fine ash. Never use abrasive pads, oven cleaner, or sharp tools, as they can scratch and weaken the surface. Burn dry, seasoned wood and avoid over-firing the stove to reduce soot buildup and thermal stress. Regularly check the door gasket and hinges so the door closes evenly, helping protect the glass from hot spots and impact.
What are the signs that the glass needs replacing again?
Replace the glass if you see cracks, chips on the edges, or a rainbow-like haze that does not clean off, as these can indicate heat damage. Deep scratches, cloudy areas, or white, etched patches also weaken the panel. Watch for smoke staining in unusual patterns, which may signal a poor seal or warped frame. If the door no longer closes firmly, the gasket is badly worn, or you can feel hot air leaking around the glass, arrange a replacement and safety check before continuing regular use.
Measure accurately, choose quality glass, order with confidence.
